Year of support. Caritas helps Ukraine
- 2 million people – the number of refugees from Ukraine with help from Caritas since the beginning of the war
- 597 million PLN – the value of humanitarian aid provided by Caritas
- 31,000 Caritas volunteers provided support at the height of the refugee crisis
- 32 Migrant and Refugee Assistance Centres continue to support those in need
- 83,000 Packages for Ukraine worth 29 million PLN were prepared by Poles
Caritas Poland helped hundes of thousands of Ukrainian refugees who arrived in Poland and responded to the humanitarian appeal of its sister organizations in Ukraine – the Roman Catholic Caritas-SPES and Greek Catholic Caritas Ukraine. The scope of assistance provided by Caritas covers all the areas of life that have been devastated by the war.
HELP IN UKRAINE: Since the beginning of the war, humanitarian transports from all over Poland worth more than 260 million PLN (c. 60 million USD) have been sent to Ukraine. We continue to provide humanitarian transports including food, hygiene products, medicine, medical supplies, or power generators across the border.
We have launched the Package for Ukraine programme and Poles have so far prepared 83,000 packages containing food with a long shelf life (e.g., pasta, tea, canned goods) and hygiene and cosmetic items (e.g., soap, toothpaste, bandages). Each package has a value of around 300-400 PLN, which means that this campaign alone delivered aid worth almost 29 million PLN (6,5 million USD).
HELP FOR UKRAINIANS IN POLAND: Caritas Poland and local diocesan Caritas have provided refugees in Poland with 3.9 million food packages.
254,000 people have benefited from administrative and legal assistance and 64,000 people from psychological assistance.
In the 32 Migrant and Refugee Assistance Centres that have been opened by diocesan Caritas across the country, 180,000 people have received support in finding employment, housing or contacting authorities. 6,500 refugees are learning Polish thanks to the support of Caritas.
In total, over the past year, we have provided in-kind and financial assistance in Poland worth 337 million PLN (75 million USD).
In addition to Ukrainians, many citizens of other countries who were in Ukraine at the time of the outbreak of the war receive assistance and aid. Caritas helps them arrange transportation to the countries of their origin. Among many others, students from Ghana received such support – Caritas evacuated them from Ukraine and helped them arrange tickets to return to their homes.
We are currently preparing for long-term aid to Ukraine. We have opened 32 Migrant and Refugee Assistance Centres in Poland. We provide free accommodation, social and psychological assistance, help settle legal matters, find Polish language course or rent an apartment. Before Christmas 2022, we also organized a meeting for the beneficiaries of our Centre at Towarowa 25a Street, Warsaw, which is visited daily by several dozen to even several hundred people.
We launched the ”Family to Family” program in Ukraine. Until October 2023, 620 Ukrainian families from the Kyiv-Zhytomyr diocese will receive direct cash support for the most urgent needs, such as the purchase of fuel and food or minor repairs in a damaged house. Each family member receives approximately 2,200 hryvnias (approximately USD 60 per month). Up to 4 family members can receive subsidies, which gives a maximum of almost UAH 9,000 per family (USD 250) per month.
In January and February 2023, with the help of Caritas-SPES, we opened 16 Points of Hope in Ukraine – places where Ukrainians suffering from Russian air raids receive protection from darkness and cold – in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Zhytomyr, Vinnytsia and other large Ukrainian cities.
'Over the past year, 2 million people have received support from Caritas in connection with the war in Ukraine,’ says father Marcin Iżycki, director of Caritas Poland. – 'This number is even bigger, if we include the border assistance organized during the first days of the war.
’We would like to thank everyone for their readiness to be with us at the border and at every later stage of support. It is thanks to our donors, volunteers and all people of good will that so much has been accomplished.
Fr. Dr. Marcin Iżycki, director of Caritas Poland
